Rotary's Commitment to Ending Polio

For over three decades, Rotary has led the global fight to eradicate polio worldwide. What began as a threat affecting hundreds of thousands of children annually has been reduced to fewer than a handful of cases today through Rotary's unwavering dedication and partnership with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Our Impact:

  • Polio cases have been reduced by more than 99.9% since 1988
  • Over 2.5 billion children have been vaccinated against polio
  • More than 18 million people who would otherwise have been paralyzed are walking today
  • Only Afghanistan and Pakistan remain polio-endemic

Why This Matters: Until polio is completely eradicated everywhere, children in all countries remain at risk. Rotary members worldwide continue to volunteer their time, resources, and expertise to ensure every child receives the polio vaccine, bringing us closer to a polio-free world.
